Tips for Moving
|
- Label everything. While you might be tempted to trust your memory
it is much easier to mark every box with a description of the content and / or the room it belongs to.
- Disconnect all appliances: turn off gas and water; empty refrigerator,
defrost freezer, disconnect ice maker.
- Take special care of pets, fish, birds and plants. Make sure you have
their food, water and comfortable bedding with you.
- Disconnect and wrap cords to televisions, VCRs, stereo equipment,
computers and related accessories. If you cannot guarantee the cords staying with their
respective equipment then put a label on it. When you get ready to assemble your entertainment
center at the new house you will be relieved to have all of the cords readily identifiable.
- Clear paths to furniture, boxes. Make sure there is a place to park when the moving van arrives.
If you live in an apartment building, you will need to reserve the elevator.
- Activate the utilities at the new locations as soon as you can.
- Set aside any items you will be carrying with you.
Pack a suitcase the same way you would if you were going on a trip,
even if you are going from one house to another. If you have to go to work the following
day, make sure you have your clothes ready and easily accessible. Everything, including shoes
and accessories, a coat if you're moving in the winter.
- Make sure you have the essentials for taking a shower. You'll be surprised to discover
how hard it is to find a bar of soap and a towel when you are getting moved in.
